With great enthusiasm and emotion, the inauguration of the Second International Book Fair in San Miguel de Allende was held, an event that seeks to strengthen the link between the community and reading, turning the municipality into the epicenter of written culture.

The ceremony took place at the emblematic Ignacio Ramírez Cultural Center ‘El Nigromante’, headquarters of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), with the presence of municipal authorities, representatives of cultural institutions, publishers, reading promoters and citizens in general.

Teacher Acacio Martínez Rodríguez, head of Culture and Traditions of the Municipal Government, highlighted the importance of this celebration as a unique opportunity to bring books closer to all generations:

“If you are in San Miguel, you breathe art, you breathe culture. And then everything else comes out gradually.”

For her part, teacher Laura Bustos, director of the Ignacio Ramírez Cultural Center ‘El Nigromante’, highlighted the role of this venue as a living space for letters, and recalled the relevance of historical figures such as Ignacio Ramírez and Rosario Castellanos, whose works will be present during the fair:

“This venue is very pertinent to celebrate with those who write, do, illustrate, read. The books and they also distribute and market them.”

Mr. Onofre Sánchez, director of the Iconographic Museum of Don Quixote, shared his experience in founding book fairs in other cities of the country, such as Guadalajara and Mexico City, and underlined the potential of San Miguel de Allende to consolidate itself as a permanent cultural plaza:

“San Miguel de Allende deserves an International Book Fair and has a very important audience, it would be very meritorious to leave this tradition permanent.”

On behalf of the municipal president, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, Councilwoman Verónica Luna Prado expressed the City Council’s commitment to the promotion of reading as a transformative and community act:

“Reading is a way to travel without moving, to know oneself, to grow and transform our reality, books help us to see with the heart.”

Over the next few days, the fair will offer a wide range of activities for all ages: editorial presentations, illustration and origami workshops, storytelling, lectures and much more. This event not only represents an encounter with the world of books, but also with identity and collective thought.
