“Regardless of the size of the city or town where men or women are born, they are ultimately the size of their work, the size of their will to aggrandize and enrich their brothers.”

These were the words of Ignacio Allende, the paramount hero of San Miguel de Allende. To recognize him, the city was renamed in his honor in 1826 and will celebrate its 200th anniversary next year. Allende conceived the idea of initiating the War of Independence and turned it into a reality. Both he and the ideas of sovereignty were born in San Miguel, making his hometown the true birthplace of independence. Who exactly was he?

“Sin importar el tamaño de la ciudad o pueblo en donde nacen los hombres o las mujeres, ellos son finalmente del tamaño de su obra, del tamaño de su voluntad de engrandecer y enriquecer a sus hermanos”.

Estas fueron las palabras de Ignacio Allende, el héroe supremo de San Miguel de Allende. En su honor, la ciudad fue renombrada en su honor en 1826 y celebrará su bicentenario el próximo año. Allende concibió la idea de iniciar la Guerra de Independencia y la hizo realidad.
