Talks, workshops, exhibitions and sale of species adapted to the semi-desert will be part of the program open to the public

 The third edition of the Biocultural Fair of Plants of the Semi-Desert will be held at the facilities of the El Charco del Ingenio Botanical Garden, in San Miguel de Allende, with a program of activities aimed at the dissemination of knowledge about the native flora and its presence in the ecosystems of the region.

On June 20 and 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the venue will offer the sale of native plants for the garden, as well as information related to their planting, watering and maintenance.

The initiative seeks to bring the population closer to species that are part of the natural landscapes of the semi-desert and that are adapted to the climatic conditions of this area of the state.

According to the organizers, native plants represent the result of adaptation processes developed over thousands of years.

Their presence within semi-arid ecosystems fulfills functions related to soil conservation, water harvesting, interaction with pollinating insects and the permanence of various forms of life associated with these environments.

The activities will begin on Saturday, June 20 with the workshop “Easy and homemade composting”, taught by Daniela del Villar, a member of Composta SMA.

At the same time, a children’s workshop called “Decorating gardens and getting to know their visitors” will be held, aimed at girls and boys interested in the observation of species present in green areas.

Later, the talk “Cultivation and care of a crassulaceae at home” will be held, by Gabriela González Vega, followed by the conference “Orchids of Guanajuato”, presented by José Viccon.

The day will conclude with the inauguration of the temporary exhibition “Possible ink, explorations with pigments and natural dyes”, coordinated by Rocío Ríos.

On Sunday, June 21, the talk “Native trees and shrubs of the semi-arid region of Guanajuato” is scheduled, given by Martina García Granados. The children’s workshop on gardens and their visitors will also be repeated.

The program will continue with the conference “Landscape Design with Native Plants”, presented by María Fernanda García Orozco and María Fernanda Pérez Fernández, members of Koriba.

Later, there will be the editorial presentation of the book “Archives of a botanical explorer, biography of Hernando Sánchez Mejorada”, by Francisco Alberico Lezama and José Francisco Ávila Castañeda.

The Biocultural Fair of Plants of the Semi-Desert will take place with free admission and is aimed at people interested in learning more about the plant species of the region, as well as those who seek to incorporate native flora in gardens and domestic spaces.

The meeting also represents an opportunity to disseminate information about the biological heritage of the Guanajuato semi-desert and the actions aimed at its conservation.
