Bordello Galleria is delighted to welcome back one of our favorite painters, Andrew Osta, for another wonderful exhibition!
Andrew’s imaginative and playful artwork has long been a favorite with our gallery visitors, and we’re happy to have him return to share his latest creations.
Ukrainian-born artist Andrew Osta has been a favorite among San Miguel art lovers since 2010. When he first arrived, at age 32, he liked to think of himself as San Miguel’s youngest (and most handsome) artist. These days, Andrew jokes that he may no longer qualify for either title, but his paintings have only grown more interesting with time.
His collectors certainly seem to agree! Many homes around San Miguel have at least one Osta painting, and some enthusiastic collectors have gathered 10, 15, or even 20 of them. If you haven’t yet discovered Andrew’s wonderfully imaginative world, this is your opportunity.
Andrew is delightfully modest about his artistic process. He claims he doesn’t really know what he’s doing, yet somehow the paintings always work out.
“I was told by everyone that I would not survive as an artist. Everyone told me to get a real job. I had no artists in my family, but I just knew that this was what I had always been meant to do.”
The years have brought Andrew a few gray hairs, along with an increasingly rich and distinctive artistic style. Although he now makes his home in Oaxaca, San Miguel continues to inspire his paintings.
As Andrew explains, “Oaxaca doesn’t have a characteristic landmark; it’s difficult to summarize as an image.”
But Andrew isn’t particularly interested in painting things exactly as they appear. His whimsical dining cats aren’t meant to be ordinary cats, and his magical version of San Miguel doesn’t necessarily follow any street map. Instead, he captures the spirit, the humor, and the feeling of a place or a moment.
As he puts it, “I am more interested in how a painting makes me feel than what it represents.”
And perhaps that’s exactly why his paintings make so many of us smile.
Bordello GalerÃa is delighted to welcome Andrew Osta back for another playful exhibition of his work. Join us in the fountain terrace and interior gallery spaces at Casa de la Noche, Órganos 19, just half a block from Hernández MacÃas.
Come enjoy the art, meet Andrew, and perhaps say hello to Max, our new resident house cat, who may have his own opinions about Andrew’s feline subjects!
