Please join us for a talk and presentation on Fiestas Patrias and Fiestas Patronales hosted by Efrain Gonzalez Espinoza and Laura Cerroblanco.

This is THE best season to be in San Miguel – you picked the right place. September is non-stop, and the fiestas run through October, November and December.
.
• Fiestas Patronales –
Patron saint festivals are annual celebrations held by a town or city in honor of its patron saint or protector, ie; Saint Michael the Archangel. They blend faith, culture, and the coming together of people.
.
• Fiestas Patrias –
National holidays are annual civic commemorations celebrating independence and national identity.
San Miguel calls itself the Fragua de la Independencia – the forge where Independence was planned in the Casa de los Conspiradores and the first free Ayuntamiento was sworn in. So Fiestas Patrias here hit differently.

Here is how it usually rolls, and what to get ready for now:
1. Fiestas Patrias – the first half of September
It all starts with the Pega del Bando Solemne – the city officially posts the program on the Palacio Municipal walls, with the Banda de Guerra Dragones de la Reina. Last year it was around Sept 8-9.

Then:
Coronaciones: Reina del Campesino (late August) and Reina de Fiestas Patrias (first week Sept)
• Carrera de la Conspiración – Sept 13
• Carrera Simbólica + Grito de Independencia – Night of Sept 15 in the Jardín. The Grito from the balcony of Presidencia, then fireworks over the Parroquia.
• Desfile Cívico Militar – Morning of Sept 16
Pro tip now: Book your dinner for the 15th already. Centro gets closed off by 4pm. Wear comfortable shoes, white or tricolor is traditional.

2. Fiestas Patronales de San Miguel Arcángel – late September into October – formal schedule to be announced.

This is the more mystical, more sanmiguelense part. It actually starts in mid-August with the Reseña – indigenous communities ask permission from San Miguel, parade a toro as an offering from Barrio Las Cuevitas through Centro.

The big weekend is around Saint’s Day, Sept 29:
Sept 28-29 – Mañanitas to San Miguel Arcángel at midnight in the Parroquia
• Alborada – The legendary one. Starts around 4am in the Plaza Principal with mariachis, brass bands, and a huge fireworks show at 5am when they sing Las Mañanitas
• Same day: Quema de los Monos (papier-mâché effigies), Entrada de Ánimas y Xúchiles with concheros and danzantes coming up Calzada de la Estación and Canal to Jardín.
• Sept 29 / weekend closest to it – Procession and religious celebrations – to be announced.
Oct 6ish – Octava de la Fiesta: the image of San Miguel tours the downtown temples
• This year the Feria de San Miguel de Allende 2026 runs Sept 25 to Oct 12, with Teatro del Pueblo, juegos mecánicos, artesanos.

How locals get ready:
• Get your xúchil: If you want to dance, barrios are already organizing. Ask in Cuevitas, San Juan de Dios, La Aurora.
• Stock up: Papel picado, sombrero, and earplugs for the Alborada cohetes. Seriously.
• Plan for crowds: For Alborada, arrive by 3:30am or watch from a rooftop terrace on Calle Correo / Umarán.
