Come. Meet…HAROLD AND MAUDE
A comedy about life, death, love… and the considerable inconvenience of other people’s expectations.
Harold is nineteen, wealthy, spectacularly bored and obsessed with death.
Maude is nearly eighty, gloriously alive and has very little patience with rules, property rights, authority, convention or the notion that growing old requires one to behave oneself.
Naturally, they meet at a funeral.
So begins HAROLD AND MAUDE, Colin Higgins’ wickedly funny, tender and thoroughly unconventional comedy about two people standing at opposite ends of life who discover they have rather more in common than anyone thinks proper.
Harold spends his days attending strangers’ funerals and staging elaborate suicides, largely for the benefit of his exasperated mother. Maude steals cars, rescues trees, ignores policemen and approaches her eightieth birthday with considerably more appetite for life than Harold has managed to summon in nineteen years.
What follows is a love story, although emphatically not the one anyone was expecting.
Higgins’ story first reached audiences in Hal Ashby’s 1971 film starring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort. Initially greeted with bewilderment, it became one of cinema’s most beloved cult classics and was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. Higgins later adapted his story for the stage, where Harold and Maude found enthusiastic audiences around the world.
Critics have called it “beautifully inventive, funny and moving,” “irresistibly sweet and charming,” and, perhaps most perfectly, “a rare gem – a play about death that makes you smile.”
Are you actually living your life, or merely behaving your way through it?
Harold thinks death is fascinating.
Maude thinks life is.
One of them is about to change his mind.
Funny, irreverent, romantic and unexpectedly moving, HAROLD AND MAUDE is for anyone who has ever suspected that the sensible people may not have understood the assignment.
Come meet Harold. Come meet Maude. And whatever you do… don’t behave yourself.
