The Marriage: Butterfly, a young geisha barely 15 years old, marries Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton—a U.S. Navy lieutenant—out of love. For her, it is an eternal and sacred bond; for him, it is merely a temporary, fleeting arrangement.
The Abandonment: Shortly after the wedding, Pinkerton returns to his home country, leaving Butterfly behind. She waits faithfully for him for three years while raising the son born of their union.
The Outcome: Pinkerton returns to Japan with his new American wife to take the child away. Deeply humiliated and stripped of her honor, Butterfly agrees to surrender her son and decides to take her own life using her father’s sword.

El matrimonio: Butterfly, una joven geisha de apenas 15 años, se casa enamorada con Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, un teniente de la marina de los Estados Unidos. Para ella es un compromiso eterno y sagrado, pero para él es solo un arreglo temporal y pasajero.
El abandono: Poco después de la boda, Pinkerton parte a su país y deja sola a Butterfly. Ella lo espera fielmente durante tres años criando a un hijo fruto de ese matrimonio.
