As part of the celebrations to San Miguel Arcángel, the so-called “Corrida de las Luces de la Alborada” will take place on Friday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Plaza de Toros Oriente, reviving the festival that used to be held many years ago, when a bullring was set up on the esplanade of the main garden.
“Now that this tradition is being revived, it’s extremely important, because it brings us back to something from centuries ago. A statue of the Archangel Saint Michael will be carried in a procession from the parish church to the plaza,” said Acacio Martínez, director of Education and Culture, who noted that the parish priest might even join the procession.
The Origins of the Corrida de las Luces in San Miguel de Allende
The Corrida de las Luces gets its name because all attendees receive a candle upon entering the venue; thus, when the procession arrives at the plaza—led by the statue of the Archangel Saint Michael and followed by the high cross, candelabra, and a choir singing in honor of the patron saint, accompanied by the bullfighters—it makes its way around the bullring amid the lights shining from the stands. “The bullfighters will be joined in the bullring’s chapel by the image of the city’s patron saint, the Archangel Saint Michael. This event is unique; it’s not new—it was already taking place in the 18th century—but it marks a return to the old traditions of San Miguel,” the director said.
The event will begin at 6:45 p.m. when the procession departs from the Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel and will be part of the patron saint festivities, featuring San Miguel-born matador Francisco Martínez, Héctor Gutiérrez from Aquicalid, and Uriel Moreno “El Zapata” from Tlaxcala, who will face bulls from the San José de Carranco ranch.
