      Breakfast today at Rustica, on Salida Celaya. Wonderful! The pastries were sinful… We’ll go back!

      Rustica, at Salida a Celaya #34, was opened by a delightful a young couple. I enjoyed visiting with Eduardo who was originally from Spain. They have turned a former, casual Mexican spot into a delightful restaurant and cafe with a perfect outdoor patio in the back. I went for lunch where they have a menu of omelettes, tacos, sandwiches, coffee and pastries. I thought the roasted beet salad and a pizza with arugula, figs, goat cheese and prosciutto was a perfect choice!!

      Another thumbs up from us for Rustica. A few of us met for breakfast this morning and the food was outstanding! Take a look at the photos and get an idea of the quality.

      Also loved the décor and the back patio. We will come back often.

      My wife and I are often slow to explore new restaurants. We were slaves to Centro, the Centro when you could drive in, park easily and go to your fave place.

      Given, we live in LaLejona II on the otra lado of town, we are pleased with Panio, Luna de Queso and other new places near the glorieta on Salida de Celaya. More than dozen years ago when we first visited SMA fellow scribe and foodie Carol Schmidt recommended Carmen’s (which had no outside name) for good local eats. This year in Carmen’s place a new resturant has arisen. A whole world different than Carmen’s.

      Today(Wednesday )we had a nice, leisurely lunch. We had entrees in toast…mine was a molletas with beans, cheese and a hint (?) of lime. Also had rústica potatoes ( sweets and regular) with spices and a small jar of corn salsa. Melon water and a mango chia custard.

      Restaurant reviews not my forte. I stuck to hard news, government, politics and film reviews.
      Our town’s newest and de facto food writer, critic Susan Knight York penned this report. With a background in food and a great website called Crab legs and Cupcakes, Susan covers all yummy things.

      Here’s her send up to Rústica:
      “Get ready for the opening of RUSTICA when Eduardo Pérez Calvo makes his official debut as a restaurant owner. You meet the nicest people in the business and Eduardo is in our top 10; he’s got the highest standard of service we know.

      Eduardo worked for his uncles, Jose Maria Calvo (Chema) and Jesus Manuel Calvo (Chus), at La Azotea (Umaran #6) and helped out at Atrio (Cuna de Allende #3). His uncles have been in the restaurant business since they opened their first bar in Spain when they were just fifteen years old. Eduardo also did a stint in 2013 at the spectacular Burtown House, an early Georgian villa, café and garden in Athy, County Kildare, Ireland. Rustica is Eduardo Perez Calvo’s first restaurant.

      We’re always on-board when we find food that tastes great and Rustica’s menu is filled with items that will delight both your taste buds and your pocketbook. The casual dining restaurant is filled with green and outdoor spaces, not to mention plenty of light. You might also be tempted to carve your initials on the tree growing through the restaurant. We did an affectionate déjà vu when we saw a familiar La Azotea sectional on the back patio.

      Who’s in the kitchen? With a long line of restaurant owners, chefs and bakers in her blood as well, here’s Selva Lampreabe Rosenfeld’s culinary inheritance: Sister Gaia graduated as a chef from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and works in Buenos Aires for the owners of two restaurants; Mother Denise has a store in El Mercado Sano and is a popular SMA baker; Cousin Amir owns five restaurants in Mexico City; Great Uncle Pablo and his wife, Lisette own a hotel and restaurant in Zitacuaro, Michoacan; Grandmother Karen made low calorie desserts in Mexico City; great-great Aunt Elvira owned several bakeries, along with her sons, in Mexico City and the Garabatos stores throughout Mexico; great-Grandmother Elizabeth owned a restaurant of the same name in Mexico City where she later opened a bakery and gave cooking classes; great-great Grandfather Martin immigrated from Hungary in the early 1920s and was a chef at the Paradise Inn in Tuscon, Arizona and also at Winkler’s Hotel in Long Beach, New York; great great Grandmother, Esther, was a pastry chef at the same two hotels; great great Uncle, Ernesto, immigrated from Hungary in the early 1900’s, fought in the Mexican Revolution and later opened a well know restaurant in Mexico City called the Sidrali. He invented the medias noches; great great Uncle Loyosh Zimmerman owned a famous restaurant in New York called Zimmerman’s Hungarian Restaurant. It was first opened in the 1930’s and closed in the 50’s. He had a key to the city and it’s where her great great grandparents worked in their first jobs in the United States.

      So, do you think the food at RUSTICA is going to be good? For someone who has cooked all her life and owns this culinary heritage, Selva is ready to take on the kitchen at RUSTICA. We thought the food was pretty fantastic; Selva does everything from scratch, including these delicious lemon ricotta pancakes, accompanied by a mound of blueberries and a generous sprinkling of almonds. We also loved the baked egg casserole so much, it’s now our go-to dish and we’ve never been one to eat cauliflower and broccoli for breakfast.

      We’re certain SMA will support Rustica when it opens; it fills the gap of healthy restaurants in SMA that also turn out fabulously, delicious food.
