Corpus Christi will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2022

The Solemn Corpus Christi Procession, from the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, will be Thursday, June 16, 2022, through the main streets of San Miguel de Allende.

This 2022 will be 30 years since 1992 when the Solemn Corpus Christi Thursday Procession was rescued.

The Solemn Corpus Christi Procession is a pilgrimage where the priority is the passing of the Consecrated Host, accompanied by songs, music, and the solemnity of the pilgrimage.

For this procession, the city of San Miguel de Allende dresses in red, with elegant banners in the streets.

There are 20 altars called “Posas” where the Blessed Sacrament is placed at each stop.

This 2022 all the poses that have been performed for 30 years have not yet been confirmed, however, there is still no official information.

In memory of the hortelanos, it has been established that at the front of the procession, the Torito dance is performed as a representation.

What is Corpus Christi?
The Corpus Christi pilgrimage (Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ), is a celebration of the Catholic Church to honor the body of Christ in its representation in the Eucharist.

The name “Corpus Christi” is in Latin, and was established in the early 13th century in 1264 by Pope Urban IV in a convent in Belgium.

In San Miguel de Allende the tradition was lost and it was in 1992 that the Fathers of the Parish and the patronage of religious and extra-liturgical celebrations, restored it again.

This was done within the framework of the celebration of the 450th Anniversary of the founding of the city and the centennial of the Evangelization.

The celebration was presided over for the first time by the Bishop of the Diocese of Celaya, Jesús Humberto Velázquez Garay.

In 2022, the eager parishioners will continue with the tradition and with it the fervor towards the Eucharist.

Dates of the event
The first meetings have already been held with the participants and “commissions”, where new generations participate.

After June 16, 2022, the Octave of Corpus Christi will be held in the Temple of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri on June 23, 2022.

This event is awaited by the confraternities, groups, and crazy pictures that also perform a pose, where the Blessed Sacrament makes its passage.

So far it has not been decided which day the Corpus Thursday stalls will be placed in the Plaza de la Soledad.
