In addition to the famous program “Exponiendo infieles”, Guanajuato has its own technique to reveal the loyalty of the couple; and it is not precisely through the cell phone, but a typical sweet of San Miguel de Allende, called ‘Tumbagon’.
In this municipality named World Heritage Site, you can find a great variety of typical sweets of the region in its various sizes and flavors; however, this sugar roll stands out not only for its taste but also for the theories that revolve around it.
But stop, because before you can know a little more about it, it is necessary to talk about the origin of its name.
Why is it called ‘Tumbagon’?
Its name comes from ‘tumbago’, a term that was given to some rings that were given to the friars to make visible and recognize their fidelity, and that is exactly why this sweet is commonly linked to loyalty to the couple. How do tumbagones reveal if someone is unfaithful?
Living up to its name, it is said that, when eaten, this typical sweet can be an indicator of fidelity. However, in order to do so, it must be held specifically with the little finger and be bitten in half; and, if at that moment it breaks and falls, that would mean that the one who is eating it is unfaithful. However, there is no need to panic, as the locals say that not only can you be unfaithful to your partner, but also to yourself.
It is worth mentioning that this sweet is made of wheat paste, anise, orange, cinnamon, powdered sugar, and a secret touch, thus forming a semi-thin dough that, if you are not careful, could easily break. Would you dare to try it?
