President’s Letter
Six months have passed since I last updated you on the state of the Festival. The pandemic continues around the world, vaccinations are proceeding, cities and states are cautiously reopening, but life is still far from normal.
Keenly aware of these conditions and with the safety of our musicians and audience in mind, the Festival’s board of directors decided to cancel live performances in 2021. Even so, the board began immediately talking with the artists previously contracted to move their performances into 2022 and 2023.
The Exciting 2022 Season Lineup
We can announce with great pleasure the 44th Festival de Música de Cámara, August 12-27, 2022. Anthony McGill, clarinet and the Gryphon Trio will open the season, followed by Orion Weiss, piano and the Parker Quartet, and Magos Herrera, vocalist and Brooklyn Rider will end the season. This combination of artists and instruments feature repertoire not often heard in San Miguel and promises to be one of the most exciting Festivals we have ever presented.
The Dover Quartet and the Escher Quartet are scheduled to close our 45th Festival in 2023. The programming committee is proceeding to round out that season with new groups, as well as Festival favorites. Make sure to sign up for updates from the home page and check our website often, as we will announce these artists as we book them.
San Miguel de Allende: A Music Destination
Future Festivals will retain the best of the past, but we are working on some exciting changes. We are collaborating with the Consejo Turistico to promote throughout North America a travel program to San Miguel during the Festival.
It will be targeted to musical interest groups who already travel to enjoy music in interesting locations. As such, concerts and other events will be presented in various venues and clustered to provide a full experience to visitors and residents alike.
Expanding Our Music Education Program
One of the successes of the pandemic has been the expansion of our music education mission. The virtual master classes with Curtis Institute of Music will resume monthly starting in September 2021. Our popular Education Week has been moved out of the Festival season and will be held in June 2022 with the return of Amit Peled and his Cello Gang. During 2022, young Mexican musicians will compete to have the opportunity to travel to San Miguel to hear and work with famous international musicians performing at the Festival.
The Music Continues in 2021
We are planning a house concert featuring Natalia Vilchis, a graduate of our 2018 Cello Week and recent Masters of Music graduate of Peabody Institute in the studio of Amit Peled on July 10.
In August, Anthony McGill will present an evening of music and conversation produced just for our Festival audience, anticipating his live performance here in 2022. This will be virtual, but plans are to gather together with food and drink to view this special evening.
And in October, we will reprise our collaboration with UNAM and Panamerican University to sponsor Curtis on Tour Latin America, October 6-16, a series of Master Classes, lectures, concert and post-concert conversation with faculty and graduates of Curtis Institute of Music. This will be the second year we will present this program virtually, but we look forward to 2022 when we plan for this exciting program to be live in Mexico.
The wheel is still spinning, music is still being played. We must not let it stop. Thank you for your continued support.
