In the historic neighborhood that bears its name, the Temple of San Juan de Dios keeps one of the most moving stories of assistance and Christian charity in San Miguel de Allende. This eighteenth-century temple is not only an architectural monument, but the living testimony of centuries of hospitable care that profoundly marked the social and spiritual life of the city.

The history of this religious complex dates back to 1753, when Father Juan Manuel de Villegas, of the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Dios, began the construction of a hospital that would meet the medical needs of the inhabitants of San Miguel el Grande. The religious known as “Juaninos” took over the administration of this hospital, which operated uninterruptedly until 1957, becoming a fundamental institution for public health in the region for more than two centuries.

The current temple, whose construction began in 1770 under the supervision of Father Villegas himself, was erected next to the hospital forming a healthcare complex that also included a cemetery that operated until 1940. The sober architecture of the temple contrasts with the importance of its mission: inside the image of Saint Raphael the Archangel, patron saint of the sick, is venerated, recalling the healing vocation that characterized this place. This corner of San Miguel de Allende is a silent testimony to colonial medicine and Christian charity, where faith and science came together for centuries to alleviate human suffering.
