We are a non-profit organization that has been serving the San Miguel community for more than 65 years. The mission of the Biblioteca is to provide, develop and maintain educational and cultural activities that contribute toward an integrated and harmonious community. The staff and volunteers work together to provide an inviting community center that provides a lending library, skills training, educational and cultural activities in a safe environment for a multi-generational and a multi-cultural community.
The library has thrived and grown through the generous gift of time and money by members of the community, and as is still the case, has relied for the past 50 years on the continued financial support of the people in San Miguel de Allende. The Biblioteca wishes to thank all of the generous persons, groups and companies for their donations of time and money.
In the heart of the historic center of San Miguel de Allende, on 25 Insurgentes Street, is a unique cultural treasure in Latin America: the Public Library of San Miguel de Allende, an institution that for more than 70 years has served as a bridge between cultures and guardian of one of the largest collections of books in English in Latin America. This library is much more than a repository of knowledge; is a vibrant community center where education, culture and social exchange converge in perfect harmony. The history of this notable institution began in 1954, when it began operations in a private house thanks to the efforts of visionaries who recognized the need for an inclusive cultural space in San Miguel de Allende. Its true transformation came in 1958, when the library moved to its current location in a colonial building that had previously been a convent and which, incredibly, had fallen into such disrepair that it functioned as a municipal garbage dump. The extraordinary restoration of this historic building turned an abandoned space into one of the most important cultural centers in the region.
As a non-profit civil association, the Public Library has maintained a clear mission for more than seven decades: to provide, develop and maintain educational and cultural activities that contribute to creating an integrated and harmonious community. Its facilities offer not only an impressive bilingual collection of books and magazines, but also an extensive program of cultural events, conferences, workshops and community activities that have made it a fundamental meeting point for local residents and the international community that has chosen San Miguel de Allende as its home.
