What does being ‘outside’ mean to you? You can bravely step outside of boundaries, or you can be forced outside a group. Whether it’s spending time in nature, living in exile, or growing up in a marginalized community, being on the ‘outside’ provides different, and essential, perspectives. Please join us on Thursday, December 12, 2024, when three accomplished local writers will read original work exploring this theme.
Judith Gille’s work has appeared in major newspapers, magazines, online literary journals and anthologies. Her memoir, The View from Casa Chepitos: A Journey Beyond the Border, won Writer’s Digest’s Grand Prize in 2013. Her second book, Todavía México: Life Beyond the Border, was released in February 2020 just as Covid broke out. For years Gille taught workshops on Publishing and Marketing at the San Miguel Writer’s Conference and is the English-language editor of the sala’s Solamente en San Miguel III and 15. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Bennington College and divides her time between San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest.
George Kalmar was born in Slovakia but from age 13 on he spent his life in the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies in English literature at Temple University in Philadelphia and his graduate work in Creative Writing at Indiana University in Bloomington. During his 32 years in Los Angeles he was a regular contributor and reader at Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center. His poetry has been published in a number of publications over the past 45 years. In 2014, he moved to San Miguel where he currently resides and dedicates his time to sculpting and poetry.
Kim Malcolm is a California native who retired from a career in government and nonprofit leadership. In 2023, she founded Aurora Books in San Miguel de Allende. Her latest book, Burden of Truth, is about a family in Louisiana whose oil resources have been stolen from its farmland for more than 100 years. Co-authored with the family matriarch, Burden of Truth was recently awarded an Honorable Mention for Best Memoir by Writers Digest.
Poetry & Prose Cafés is an all-volunteer organization that presents local and visiting writers reading original work. Admission is free but we appreciate a minimum donation of $100 pesos per person. These donations underwrite the costs of graphic design, promotional efforts, venue costs, and sound technicians. Authors’ books will be for sale at our no-commission book table.
Doors open at 4:30PM but please arrive early. Seating is limited and this will also give you time to order one of Café Murmullo’s delicious drinks.
