A half-liter glass is only sold for 55 pesos. However, merchants in San Miguel de Allende say they are not making any profits due to the exaggeratedly high price of oranges.
The price per liter of natural orange juice has reached 100 pesos in cafeterias, restaurants, and juice and fresh fruit stores in the markets of San Miguel de Allende.
Due to the increase in the cost of supplies, merchants in the Ignacio Ramírez market had to increase their prices, even sacrificing their income, since in the case of oranges, the profit is almost zero.
The price of orange juice reached 100 pesos per liter, and a half-liter glass is charged at 55 pesos, however, the merchants point out that they do not earn anything, because the kilo of the fruit has increased so much in the last few weeks, that they have no choice but to sell it “almost at cost.”
In fruit stores in the same market, oranges are sold at 55 pesos per kilo and, due to the high cost, most of the stalls have little product because people prefer to buy other less-expensive fruit.
The same thing happens in food stores, they have few oranges because people prefer to drink carrot juice, plain water, or soft drinks, rather than pay the high cost of citrus juice, which is more expensive than even a cake, a hamburger, or an order of quesadillas.
“We have to have orange juice because most customers ask for it,” said one of the merchants who pointed out that there are absolutely no profits in selling orange juice.
